Something crucial is missing in our approach to mental wellbeing

This was one of the most thought provoking books I’ve read in a while and I needed to share.

I feel like we talk so much about the importance of taking care of our mental health, going to therapy, setting boundaries and filling up your own cup (all of which I think are incredibly important)…

But sometimes I think we overlook one of the most important influences on our mental wellbeing which is our sense of connection, belonging and community.

We have become so self-sufficient in our modern world that we don’t rely on each other in our everyday life the way our ancestors did and that has had consequences.

•This book explores why depression and suicide rates often decrease when there is a local disaster or catastrophic event.
•Why veterans often miss war when they return home.
•Why many people throughout history have missed times of war like the Blitz.
•And what we can learn from the way Indigenous Peoples have been living for tens of thousands of years.

I can’t recommend this book enough if you like psychology, anthropology and history but in a very digestible and thought-provoking way.

This has all really got me thinking about how I can contribute to this sense of belonging and connection in my own community, and I would really appreciate your thoughts…

How do you feel we could create more of a sense in our modern world?

And how do you currently create that sense of community where you live?
