Why do I have the Sunday scaries?

In 2022 I shared a video on how to reduce the Sunday scaries on TikTok. Every Sunday, my message reaches new eyes and ears, offering guidance on tackling that familiar feeling of dread. However, a year and a half I believe there's a deeper question we should be exploring: Why are you experiencing the Sunday scaries in the first place?

As a life and career coach dedicated to helping individuals create fulfilling lives, I often encounter people grappling with this phenomenon for 3 main reasons:

  1. Unattainable expectations: It can be extremely disheartening to have a plan or vision for the week ahead, and to feel like you like you’re never able to accomplish it. This can also be a strong catalyst for anxiety or burnout. In order to fix this, we need to understand why this is happening in the first place. Is it because of the way that you approach your work? Is it the expectations you have for yourself are unreasonable? Is it the expectations of others are unreasonable? Do you need to ask for help? Do you need to set stronger or clearer boundaries? This is not all on you, but there are ways we can work on this that are within your control. Your work should not make you feel horrible.

  2. Lack of purpose: Your weekends may give you a sense of purpose and fulfilment, but your week may feel from from it. You may find yourself asking…What is all of this for? Does any of this actually matter? Are any of us happy here? And so we need to begin exploring these questions and see how we can integrate more meaning, purpose and even joy into your every week. We need to start asking and answering big questions like… Why are you here? What matters to you? What impact do you want to leave behind?

  3. You’re on the wrong path: On paper everything may seem good or okay, but something feels off for you. You may have gone down a path that was right for you at one time, but it’s not what’s right for you now. You may have gone down that path because you wanted to live up to other people’s ideas of success - your parents, society, your manager, or teachers. You may find yourself judging yourself for your lack of gratitude towards your seemingly great circumstances but still be wrestling with this uneasy or unsettled feeling.

Addressing these complex challenges and questions requires introspection and often external guidance. As a coach, I specialize in navigating these kinds of complexities with my clients, helping them uncover answers and chart meaningful paths forward.

While this isn't easy work, it is so worth it. If you want to dig into this more and want to learn how I can help and how I approach these sorts of challenges, I would love to have a conversation with you. You can schedule a free discovery call with me here.
